Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)

  • Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)

ADRA provides reliable and sustainable water solutions tailored to the needs of the most vulnerable in rural and underserved areas. Solar-powered systems deliver clean and affordable water to communities in Madagascar, Sudan, Haiti, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. Gravity-fed systems ensure a continuous supply in regions with suitable topography, such as Madagascar and Myanmar. Rainwater harvesting initiatives, including catchment tanks and hafirs, support dry season water storage in Sudan. In rural Africa, handpump rehabilitation projects restore access to safe water and build community capacity for long-term operation.

Our sanitation programs offer safe, sustainable solutions to restore human dignity and promote health. Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) empowers communities to adopt safe practices without subsidies, fostering ownership and sustainability. Market-based approaches generate employment and create sustainable waste management systems that strengthen local economies and protect the environment. ADRA prioritizes comprehensive solutions that reduce barriers for vulnerable groups, particularly ensuring girls in schools have access to safe facilities.

Hygiene education forms the cornerstone of ADRA’s WASH strategy, transforming health through behavior change. Hygiene promotion, supported by research-driven strategies to prevent disease, is embedded into all our WASH interventions. In Madagascar, this includes efforts to curb fecal-borne disease transmission, while programs in Ecuador and Peru promote handwashing, respiratory hygiene, and menstrual hygiene, among other practices.

Cross-sector integration ensures hygiene efforts amplify the impact of nutrition, education, and health initiatives, enhancing school attendance, cognitive development, and overall productivity. By integrating sustainable water access, innovative sanitation solutions, and transformative hygiene education, ADRA’s WASH programs holistically improve health, restore dignity, and empower communities to thrive in even the most challenging environments—building healthier, more resilient societies with dignity and opportunity for all.
