The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) is on the ground in Venezuela assessing humanitarian needs after a powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck the country on June 24 at 6:05 p.m. local time. The earthquake, centered near Morón in Carabobo state, affected some of the country’s most populated areas, including Carabobo and Yaracuy, with millions of people experiencing strong to severe shaking.
As emergency response efforts continue, ADRA Venezuela is working alongside local authorities, OCHA, and the Seventh-day Adventist Church network to assess the situation and identify the communities with the greatest needs. Initial assessments indicate urgent needs for food, safe water, hygiene supplies, emergency shelter, and medical assistance.
ADRA’s initial response plan is to provide emergency hygiene kits to more than 1,000 people while continuing to assess the full impact of the disaster. Additional assistance will be determined as more information becomes available and access to affected communities improves.
*Logistical and Operational Challenges
Relief operarions face significant obstacles following the complete closure of Simón Bolívar International Airport after cracks were discovered on the runway, preventing the direct arrival of international relief supplies. Widespread power outages, the collapse of land-based telecommunications, and isolated incidents of civil unrest have further complicated response efforts. Meanwhile, response teams continue to operate under constant alert as more than 138 aftershocks have been recorded.
ADRA’s Response
As part of its initial emergency response, ADRA Venezuela activated its National Emergency Management Plan and deployed assessment teams to evaluate the most urgent humanitarian needs in the affected areas. These efforts are being carried out in close coordination with Civil Protection authorities, local governments, humanitarian organizations, and other emergency response partners.
ADRA Venezuela has already received an initial emergency allocation of US$100,000 from ADRA International, headquartered in Maryland, USA, to support immediate relief operations. The organization is also mobilizing additional resources to expand its response.
At this stage, ADRA’s emergency intervention is focused on two primary sectors:
Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH)
- Distribution of personal hygiene kits
- Support for access to safe drinking water
- Water purification activities
- Public health assessments in displacement sites
Food Security
- Distribution of emergency food baskets to affected families
- Priority assistance for households with children under five years of age and older adults
