SILVER SPRING, MD (September 30, 2022) – The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) stands with communities devastated by Hurricanes Ian and Fiona and urges them to take caution in the aftermath of the storms. ADRA advises storm victims to follow the safeguards recommended by emergency agencies such as FEMA.gov.

  • If you must use candles, keep them away from anything that might catch fire.
  • Turn off the electricity and natural gas or propane tanks in your home to avoid fire, electrocution, or explosions.
  • Use bottled, boiled, or treated water for drinking, cooking, and personal hygiene.
  • Throw away any food that has been exposed to flood or runoff.
  • Do not drive in flooded areas—cars and other vehicles might be swept away or stall in flowing water.
  • Keep away from floodwater and if you are exposed, wash well with soap or alcohol wipes. It can have harmful germs, human and livestock waste, wild animals like snakes and gators, and down power lines.
  • Beware of carbon monoxide poisoning (CO). Generators, portable gasoline or coal-burning equipment like charcoal grills, and camp stoves should not be used inside homes. (CO) has the potential to cause disease and death.
  • Be careful with homes and buildings after storms. Don’t enter damaged structures that can collapse.
  • Be informed and stay tuned to public safety information.
