SILVER SPRING, MD (May 9, 2024) – The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) is taking urgent action to address critical food security needs among displaced communities in Gaza in response to the escalating humanitarian crisis in the region.
Amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza, the plight of the local population has reached critical levels. Families have been forcibly displaced, essential infrastructure lies in ruins, and basic necessities like food and water have become alarmingly scarce. Shockingly, recent reports from the United Nations indicate that approximately 30 percent of children under the age of two are suffering from acute malnutrition, while over 70 percent of the population is on the brink of famine and enduring catastrophic hunger.
In light of this harrowing situation, ADRA has acted swiftly, mobilizing its resources to provide urgent assistance and support to the affected communities.
“ADRA continues to pray for peace and the protection of the millions of people impacted by the ongoing crisis in Gaza. Our hearts go out to those who have lost loved ones and are enduring unimaginable suffering. In the face of immense complexity, the urgency of humanitarian aid remains unchanged. ADRA is collaborating with partners to deliver vital resources and sustenance to those in need, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, or religious and political affiliations. Our mission is deeply rooted in principles of justice, compassion, and love, compelling us to aid those facing dire circumstances, Today, at this challenging time, we are presented with an opportunity to bring meaningful change to thousands of people, both young and old, in Gaza and nearby regions,” says ADRA International President Michael Kruger.
ADRA’s Collaborative Efforts
ADRA, in partnership with non-profit organizations like Anera, has launched the 2024 Gaza Emergency Food Project to extend vital assistance to communities in the region. This joint endeavor encompasses a range of initiatives aimed at addressing the immediate needs of those hardest hit by the crisis.
Key Initiative
- Food Distribution: ADRA’s response includes the procurement, preparation, and distribution of more than 28,500 hot meals through community kitchens in North Gaza, ensuring that vulnerable individuals receive nourishment during these trying times.
- Hygiene Support: ADRA will distribute hygiene kits to promote health and sanitation practices among affected communities, mitigating the risk of disease transmission.
- Food Parcels: Over 7300 food parcels containing essential items such as tomato sauce, potatoes, carrots, cooking oil, and za’atar—an aromatic Middle Eastern blend of herbs, sesame seeds, and sumac spice—will be distributed to host communities through local cooperatives, providing sustenance and culinary diversity to those in need.
Commitment to Collaboration
ADRA remains steadfast in its commitment to working closely with local partners and relevant authorities to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of humanitarian aid to those most in need. Through collaborative efforts, ADRA seeks to make a meaningful difference in the lives of crisis-affected communities in Gaza and beyond.
“Please stand with ADRA by supporting this life-saving mission. Together, we possess the capacity to alleviate the suffering in Gaza and other regions around the world facing devastating emergencies. Your partnership will make a difference. Thank you for your unwavering compassion and swift response to those in need,” says President Kruger.
