We have been living in crisis for at least a full week now—much longer for some of us.
How are you?
This is not a rhetorical question. It is literal and sincere. Take this moment to pause, breathe deeply, and consider your feelings.
If you feel uncertainty, anxiety, and even fear, you are not alone. That is a natural reaction to the ongoing global health crisis. If you wonder about the status of your job, your school, the education of your children or grandchildren, the state of the economy, or the health of your loved ones, you are not alone. We are all in a similar position.
It is a position Glorimar knows well. In 2017, Hurricane Maria destroyed her home and community in Puerto Rico. One day she had house. The next day it was a pile of rubble.
“The saddest thing was to see the house,” Glorimar said. “I’m not sure I can explain it. The feelings are so strong. It was just so awful.”
In the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, ADRA was one of the first agencies to arrive to Villa Cristiana. The team on the ground assessed the community needs and identified Glorimar as being among the families least capable of recovery. They began construction on her house in February of 2018.
Today, Glorimar is back in a secure cement home.
“We always find ways to keep going on,” she said. “It is a long, hard process, but with the help of God and ADRA, I am faithful.”
I pray that during this national emergency, you remain faithful like Glorimar. I pray that you, too, find the strength to keep going on.
