ADRA Mexico began early damage assessments in the hours following a 7.1 magnitude earthquake that hit Mexico on September 19. This is the second massive earthquake to hit the country in less than 2 weeks.
This second earthquake was centered on the states of Morelos and Puebla, and caused massive damage in Mexico City, the country’s capital. 225 deaths have been reported in less than 24 hours, buildings have been toppled, and more than 1,000 schools have been damaged or destroyed.
ADRA Mexico is coordinating closely with local authorities, as well as Seventh-day Adventist unions and conferences in the area, to bring the most effective response to the area as soon as possible.
This first earthquake hit on September 8 off the southern coast of Mexico and carried an 8.1 magnitude. Close to 100 deaths have been reported from that first earthquake. ADRA is responding with an emergency distribution of food and are also putting a focus on shelter materials for those who have been displaced from their homes.
