Hurricane Helene: ADRA Urges Caution as Recovery Efforts Begin

SILVER SPRING, MD (September 27, 2024) – The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) stands in solidarity with communities affected by Hurricane Helene and urges residents to prioritize safety in the aftermath of the storm.  According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the category 4 storm is one of the largest and fiercest to hit the United States.

ADRA, which has a long history of responding to disasters worldwide, encourages extreme caution when navigating recovery efforts.

Key Safety Tips

Floodwater Caution: Stay away from floodwaters. If you must come into contact, wash thoroughly with soap or use alcohol wipes to reduce the risk of harmful germs and contaminants.

Water Safety: Use bottled, boiled, or treated water for drinking, cooking, and personal hygiene.

Candle Safety: If using candles, ensure they are placed away from flammable materials and never leave them unattended.

Utilities: Turn off electricity and natural gas or propane tanks in your home to prevent fires, electrocution, or explosions.

Food Safety: Discard any food that has been exposed to floodwaters or runoff.

Driving Hazards: Avoid driving through flooded areas. Vehicles can be swept away or stuck in fast-moving water.

Carbon Monoxide Awareness: Never use generators, charcoal grills, or camp stoves indoors, as they can produce dangerous levels of CO.

Building Safety:  Exercise caution when inspecting homes and buildings. Do not enter damaged structures that could collapse.

Stay Informed: Keep up with local news and public safety information for updates on recovery efforts and safety alerts.

ADRA responds to an average of two disasters each week, apart from supporting communities in long-term humanitarian crises and conflicts. The global humanitarian organization collaborates with emergency management and health agencies worldwide to provide swift response and relief to populations affected by natural disasters and other catastrophes.
