People were passing him on the left and right, but nobody was stopping to help. Shouting for someone to call 9-1-1, Billy ran over to stay with the man and care for him until the ambulance arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/adra.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_2160-718x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25590\" width=\"359\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adra.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_2160-718x1024.jpg 718w, https:\/\/adra.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_2160-210x300.jpg 210w, https:\/\/adra.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_2160-768x1096.jpg 768w, https:\/\/adra.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_2160-1076x1536.jpg 1076w, https:\/\/adra.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_2160-1435x2048.jpg 1435w, https:\/\/adra.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_2160-scaled.jpg 1794w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 359px) 100vw, 359px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cOh, yeah, he\u2019s been there for 15 or 20 minutes,\u201d <\/em>a woman said as she passed. Billy couldn\u2019t believe his ears. Here was a man who was literally bleeding to death. Hundreds maybe thousands of people had passed him. And not one person had done even the minimum to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cFrom that experience, I saw that God can always use us,\u201d <\/em>says Billy Andre, ADRA\u2019s emergency response program manager for Africa and Europe.<em> \u201cWe just have to be willing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andre takes some of his inspiration for living a life of service from Dr. King. \u201c<em>MLK encouraged people to not be indifferent to anybody, anytime, anywhere,\u201d <\/em>says Andre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Andre learned that Dr. King carried around with him a book by his mentor, Howard Thurman, called <em>Jesus and the Disinherited<\/em>, Andre decided to read it for himself. In this book, he read about Jesus as a powerful force. <em>\u201cHe was relatable because he was not afraid to help the most vulnerable. He was a refugee, homeless, and poor just like them,\u201d<\/em> says Andre. <em>\u201cThe book has been my call to action.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Andre coordinates emergency projects in Africa, Europe, and around the world, he takes cues on how to live his life from Dr. King. \u201c<em>Studying what he did, I discovered what motivated him, and I tried to learn from that so I can have a powerful impact,\u201d <\/em>says Andre. <em>\u201cHe followed the footsteps of Jesus. If I do the same thing. I\u2019ll also have a similar impact.\u201d<\/em> And that\u2019s exactly what Andre loves about his job. Working for ADRA, Andre is able to impact the lives of hundreds, if not thousands, of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mayra del Villar-Malcolm: Beloved Community<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a hurricane hit the Dominican Republic, young Mayra helped her mother organize a shipment of donated items that the community had received from ADRA. It was her first experience with the organization, but it wasn\u2019t her first exposure to service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/adra.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/8D11461F-F5BB-40D0-99C7-E413A0990140-rotated.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25591\" width=\"425\" height=\"638\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adra.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/8D11461F-F5BB-40D0-99C7-E413A0990140-rotated.jpeg 567w, https:\/\/adra.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/8D11461F-F5BB-40D0-99C7-E413A0990140-200x300.jpeg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mayra&#8217;s parents were always concerned about the needs of others. Her mother was the principal of a large Adventist school. Mayra&#8217;s mother was determined to include anyone who wanted to attend, even if they couldn&#8217;t afford to pay tuition in the traditional way. <em>\u201cIf there was a chair in that room, that kid was in,&#8221; <\/em>says Mayra del Villar-Malcom, who now serves as a liaison for ADRA International service employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even as a child, Mayra imitated her mother&#8217;s actions by going into poor communities with felt boards and felts in hand to tell Bible stories to children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon moving to the United States, Villar-Malcolm began learning more about the work of Martin Luther King, Jr. <em>\u201cI particularly liked the concept of a beloved community,\u201d <\/em>says Villar-Malcolm, <em>\u201ca community where everyone is cared for. Where there is no poverty, no hunger, no hate. That also aligns with my Christian values.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is this value that led Villar-Malcolm to work for ADRA. <em>\u201cWe offer services to everyone regardless of race, nationality, sex, education, financial resources, or religion,\u201d <\/em>says Villar-Malcolm, <em>\u201cwe are trying to contribute to and create communities that are very much the beloved community that Dr. King envisioned.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In helping to create this kind of community, Villar-Malcom is fulfilling her God-given mission. <em>\u201cThe beloved community that Dr. King spoke about,\u201d<\/em> says Villar-Malcom, <em>\u201cthat\u2019s the kind of kingdom I imagine Jesus would want for us.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>JoDee Fairbanks: Justice, Compassion, and Love<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Little JoDee flipped through the ADRA materials her parents had received. She felt moved to help. By the time she was 8, JoDee was giving money to ADRA and was sure that when she grew up, she would become a missionary so she could help the people she saw in the pictures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/adra.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/A755AE7E-1A41-4AD0-B0B4-D3EDA662E38B-1-769x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25592\" width=\"385\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adra.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/A755AE7E-1A41-4AD0-B0B4-D3EDA662E38B-1-769x1024.jpeg 769w, https:\/\/adra.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/A755AE7E-1A41-4AD0-B0B4-D3EDA662E38B-1-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/adra.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/A755AE7E-1A41-4AD0-B0B4-D3EDA662E38B-1-768x1022.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/adra.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/A755AE7E-1A41-4AD0-B0B4-D3EDA662E38B-1-1154x1536.jpeg 1154w, https:\/\/adra.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/A755AE7E-1A41-4AD0-B0B4-D3EDA662E38B-1-1539x2048.jpeg 1539w, https:\/\/adra.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/A755AE7E-1A41-4AD0-B0B4-D3EDA662E38B-1-scaled.jpeg 1923w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 385px) 100vw, 385px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As she grew up JoDee had the opportunity to go on several short-term mission trips and was involved in church activities. \u201c<em>Service has always been a way of life for me,\u201d s<\/em>ays JoDee Fairbanks, who now serves as a program officer at ADRA. <em>\u201cMy parents have always had hearts for service.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then in high school, JoDee had another life-changing experience as she read Dr. King\u2019s Birmingham Letters, which he wrote from jail. <em>\u201cReading the Birmingham letters was a very emotional and deep experience for me,\u201d<\/em> says Fairbanks. <em>\u201c<\/em><em>His call for justice and equity was, straight up, a beautiful thing,\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She saw in these letters the same values her parents had raised her with. \u201c<em>It doesn\u2019t matter where you come from,\u201d<\/em> says Fairbanks, <em>\u201cyou are given respect because you are a child of God.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One class shy of completing her master\u2019s degree in community international development from Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Mich., Fairbanks is launching her career with an organization that shares Dr. King\u2019s values. <em>\u201cADRA\u2019s motto is to serve humanity as God intended,\u201d<\/em> says Fairbanks, <em>\u201cand our slogan is justice, compassion, and love. And I think that fits very well with what Dr. King was all about. He was about justice, compassion, love, equality, and serving as God intended.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This MLK Day, Fairbanks hopes to pass on Dr. King\u2019s legacy to her 5-year-old niece. <em>\u201cShe\u2019s been having skin color issues recently,\u201d<\/em> says Fairbanks, <em>\u201cand it breaks my heart.
