\u201cJ'ai peur de mourir de faim\u201d.\u201d\u00a0<\/b>Marie-Julina\u00a0said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u201cJ'ai huit enfants et quatre petits-enfants qui vivent avec moi\u201d, a-t-elle d\u00e9clar\u00e9. \u201cJe suis responsable de leur survie. Cela fait huit ans que nous n'avons pas assez \u00e0 manger. Nous avions beau planter, rien ne poussait.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCertains de mes enfants n'ont jamais eu plus d'un repas par jour.<\/b>\u00a0Ils n'ont jamais eu l'occasion de manger \u00e0 leur faim. Leur estomac les ronge en permanence. Je suis tr\u00e8s inqui\u00e8te pour eux.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Marie-Julina\u00a0motions toward the house behind her. It\u2019s tiny,\u00a0doorless, and completely empty except for the straw mats she drags outside to sit on.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

La plupart des<\/b>\u00a0de Marie-<\/b>Julina's<\/b>\u00a0les petits-enfants ne connaissent que la faim.\u00a0<\/b>A lifetime of hollow stomachs is visible in their stunted and frail bodies. Yet they play as any child would. Marie-Julina\u00a0watches them, smiling at their simple games. But she doesn\u2019t know how long it will last\u2014their games, or their\u00a0lives.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Marie-Julina\u00a0does what she can to earn some income. She collects and sells firewood. And she makes and sells straw mats. But the selling part doesn’t happen very often. Most of her\u00a0neighbors\u00a0struggle too. She feels she\u00a0has to\u00a0do something, even if it is for a\u00a0meager\u00a0and unpredictable income.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On the rare occasion when she can make a sale, Marie-Julina\u00a0will buy three cassava. She cuts the tubers (much like a potato) into small pieces and boils them. Then she divides them between her family\u2014all 13 of them. Think of it\u2014three large potatoes (and nothing additional) to feed more than a dozen people!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ce sera leur seul repas pour toute la journ\u00e9e. Et peut-\u00eatre le lendemain, et qui sait combien de temps encore.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I don\u2019t have enough money to buy cassava, we look for cactus fruit,\u201d she said. Some of her\u00a0neighbors\u00a0have planted cactus as fences around their houses. Marie-Julina\u00a0and the children will walk through the village to find what they can.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Everyone is suffering in Marie-Julina\u2019s\u00a0village. Most of the other families have fathers and husbands that help provide. Marie-Julina\u00a0faces each day alone; the survival of her children rests on her shoulders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Harvest and heartache go hand in hand for Marie-Julina\u00a0and her family.\u00a0\u00a0 For the past eight years, the drought has multiplied her family\u2019s suffering. No rain means no crops. No crops mean no income. No income means no food. No food means, well, eventually someone will die.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
