Alors que le cyclone tropical de cat\u00e9gorie 5 Winston s'abat sur les \u00eeles Fidji, l'Agence adventiste de d\u00e9veloppement et de secours (ADRA) est pr\u00eate \u00e0 intervenir.<\/p>\n
According to the Fiji MET service, Cyclone Winston made landfall early Sunday morning (local time) with devastating winds averaging 220km\/h and gusts up to 315km\/h.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe government has been active in warning and preparing people for what is said to be the worst cyclone ever in the Southern Hemisphere,\u201d said Greg Young, Director for ADRA in the South Pacific Region.<\/p>\n
\u201cADRA staff on the ground are also busy preparing to meet people\u2019s most urgent needs,\u201d he said. \u201cWe also have a trained team of experts from around the region offering support and preparing to arrive in Fiji as soon as transport is available.\u201d<\/p>\n
Funding has already been committed by the global ADRA network, including ADRA Australia and ADRA New Zealand.<\/p>\n
Having responded extensively to Cyclone Pam in Vanuatu last year, ADRA is preparing to extend similar assistance to Fiji.<\/p>\n
According to Mr Young, ADRA Fiji has prepositioned supplies at a number of sites which will ensure they can respond quickly. Plus, staff from the agency\u2019s ongoing community development projects will begin assessments as soon as the storm has passed.<\/p>\n
\u201cADRA has\u00a0a strong presence on the ground and our existing partnerships\u00a0will allow ADRA personnel to respond efficiently\u00a0to\u00a0this disaster.\u201d<\/p>\n
In March last year, ADRA distributed shelter, hygiene kits, food and water\u00a0to thousands of people affected by Cyclone Pam in Vanuatu.<\/p>\n\n\n
