{"id":20203,"date":"2020-12-17T15:13:07","date_gmt":"2020-12-17T15:13:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/adra.org\/?p=20203"},"modified":"2026-03-25T16:01:51","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T16:01:51","slug":"news-release-tons-of-adra-emergency-supplies-airlifted-by-colombian-air-force-to-support-hurricane-recovery-efforts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adra.org\/es\/news-release-tons-of-adra-emergency-supplies-airlifted-by-colombian-air-force-to-support-hurricane-recovery-efforts","title":{"rendered":"Comunicado de prensa: La Fuerza A\u00e9rea Colombiana transporta toneladas de suministros de emergencia de ADRA para apoyar los esfuerzos de recuperaci\u00f3n tras el hurac\u00e1n"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>COLOMBIAN ISLANDS (December 17, 2020)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) joins forces with the Adventist Church to help families impacted by recent Hurricanes Eta and Iota in the cluster islands of San Andr\u00e9s, Providencia and Santa Catalina, Colombia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The back-to-back destructive storms that slammed the Caribbean islands located about 480 miles northwest of Colombia\u2019s mainland, killed and injured several people, damaged and destroyed more than 95&nbsp;percent of the homes, churches, and buildings in the region, and left thousands of people homeless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ADRA deployed&nbsp;several&nbsp;tons of humanitarian aid from Puerto Rico to provide emergency shelter for the victims and support the reconstruction project in the archipelago. We leveraged available resources in Puerto Rico because it was&nbsp;one of&nbsp;the closest locations to the Caribbean islands,\u201d says Mario Oliveira, director for emergency management at&nbsp;ADRA. \u201cWe are grateful to our partners, the Adventist church, and the Colombian Air Force for providing personnel and the cargo plane that made it possible to airlift tons of supplies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Colombian President Ivan Duque&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IvanDuque\/status\/1338678109126725633\" target=\"_blank\">tweeted<\/a>&nbsp;his appreciation in Spanish for the humanitarian and logistics operation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe @AirForceCol arranged an aircraft to collect 28 tons of humanitarian aid sent by Puerto Rico and the Cayman Islands, for our compatriots from #Providencia, which includes items such as tents, water filters, tools. We hope that this will be a blessing for everyone there,\u201d says Pastor Luis Rivera, president of the Adventist Church in Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ADRA emergency teams have been on the ground in the Colombian islands responding to the current crisis and helping affected communities since the massive hurricanes hit the region in November.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cADRA mobilized its advanced disaster response team, the GARSA Rescue&nbsp;Operative&nbsp;Group, who arrived in San Andr\u00e9s on November 18, to rescue survivors and assess the damage. Since that time, we have participated in more than 33 disaster&nbsp;response operations. We came to clear roads, cut-down fallen trees, fix roofs, and repair homes,\u201d says Jair&nbsp;Florez&nbsp;Guzm\u00e1n,&nbsp;ADRA\u2019s&nbsp;director for Colombia. \u201cWe have also provided emotional support and emergency assistance. Please continue to pray for all the people affected by this disaster. Photo credit: ADRA in Colombia<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, ADRA rescue teams and church volunteers delivered more than 1,300 hygiene kits and 550&nbsp;gas stoves to affected families in San Andres, Providencia, and Santa Catalina.
