Kyrgyzstan Rocked by Earthquake

In mid-November a 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck the Osh province in Kyrgyzstan, affecting six districts.

ADRA distributed food aid to some of the estimated 15,000 people affected by the disaster. Food packages containing two weeks worth of food were delivered to 165 families, benefiting almost 1000 people.

Over 4000 homes were damaged, 800 of these severely, and 200 were completely destroyed. Damage was also sustained by schools, mosques, community centers, and health clinics.

Cangozueva, a 72-year-old pensioner, lives with his eldest son, his wife and children. On November 17, the family was in the house when the earthquake struck. The initial earthquake was followed by aftershocks, which saw their roof fall in.

“We ran out of the house, but could not comprehend much in the first few minutes,” he said. “Later it became clear that there was an earthquake. Together with our neighbors we were left without homes. Now we have nothing, but God didn’t forget us, as we have received help through different people.”
