Zimbabwe faces pressing humanitarian challenges, particularly in the area of food security. The country has been affected by recurring droughts and crop failures, which have resulted in malnutriiton and hunger, especially among vulnerable groups like children. The lack of access to clean water and sanitation facilities is another major challenge, which has resulted in waterborne diseases. Limited access to quality healthcare contributes to preventable diesases and inadequate maternal and child health care. The country also struggles with economic challenges, leading to high levels of unemployment and poverty.

ADRA Zimbabwe has a targeted focus on agricultural production to improve food and nutrition security, livelihooods, and the economy. Climate smart and nutrition-sensitive agriculture is promoted through the use of improved and smart agricultural technologies such as solar powered micro-irrigation stems and hybrid seeds. The Farmer Market School approach empowers farmers to produce for the market after comprehensive market research.

To improve access to clean and safe water for communities in rural and urban areas, ADRA Zimbabwe utilizes borehole drilling, rehabilitation of water points, and water quality testing. The ADRA Zimbabwe owned drilling rig enables the organization to reach poor and marginalized communities with much needed clean and safe water.

In Zimbabwe, a holistic and community driven approach to health is implemented, focusing on mental, physical, and spiritual well being. Interventions include prevention and management of non-communicable diseases, health education for pregnant mothers, and improved nutrition for vulnerable children under the age of 5. Hand-washing facilities and latrines are built in households, schools and clinics with special attention to the needs of the disabled, women, and girls.

In education, an inter-sectoral approach is taken to develop the whole person and addresses barriers to learning, such as the construction of school buildings, the provision of textbooks, and other educational materials. Non-formal education is facilitated through the use of the REFLECT approach and Basic Functional Adult Literacy training, which target adult learners, youths and out of school children. ADRA Zimbabwe partners with the government’s Home Grown School Feeding Programme by providing nutritious school meals and clean, safe water.

Natural and made-man hazards have been increasing in frequency, scale, and impact. ADRA Zimbabwe, through a well-coordinated system provides life-saving support and resilience building to communities in need. The organization trains communities on risk assessment, analysis, scenario planning, and resource mobilization to build resilience against future shocks and hazards. A trained emergency response team is always ready to deploy.

FEATURED STORY

ADRA Celebrates 40th Anniversary by Planting 40,000 Trees in Zimbabwe

The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) is kicking off its 40th anniversary celebrations in Africa by planting 40,000 fruit trees across Zimbabwe from August to December. The theme of the #plantafruittree project, “Environmental Safeguarding and Climate Change,” highlights ADRA’s legacy of implementing practical efforts to mitigate the consequences of climate change and improve community health.

ADRA inaugurated the #plantafruittree initiative in August, with the assistance of Zimbabwe Forestry Commission officials, by hosting public tree-planting demonstrations at campsites and planting the first 1,000 trees in the country’s schools, farms, homesteads, and institutions across ten provinces. The arbor celebrations continue this month with the installation of 200 more fruit trees on September 9 at the Country Club Newlands Zimbabwe golf course in Harare. ADRA International President Michael Kruger, ADRA partner USAID representatives, government leaders, ambassadors from various embassies, and over 3,000 church volunteers are expected to participate in the tree-planting ceremony.

“We recognize that climate change has a wide array of impacts and inevitably has considerable implications on humanitarian and development interventions,” says Judith Musvosvi, country director for ADRA Zimbabwe. “ADRA is dedicated to promoting environmental sustainability and raising awareness on the impact of climate change.
